I figured we could set a sticky where we can post our favorite articles. If you're a spammer and try to post your crap here, bolts of lightning will come out and strike your privates. You're better off just not doing it.

The first installment is by, love him or hate him, Matt Taibbi from Rolling Stone. This one hit me pretty hard, especially this realization:

"Borrowing at zero percent interest, banks like Goldman now had virtually infinite ways to make money. In one of the most common maneuvers, they simply took the money they borrowed from the government at zero percent and lent it back to the government by buying Treasury bills that paid interest of three or four percent. It was basically a license to print money — no different than attaching an ATM to the side of the Federal Reserve.

"You're borrowing at zero, putting it out there at two or three percent, with hundreds of billions of dollars — man, you can make a lot of money that way," says the manager of one prominent hedge fund. "It's free money."

I guess it's a pretty simple concept, but, man...they're really fucking us. Too bad our politicians are too worthless, limp-dick, and corrupt to do something about this.

I added to SH and DOG this morning before the open. If it gets there, I'll add more shorts at 1130 area. Going to buy more physical silver if it drops to the $15/oz area.

Three Reported Missing After Animal Rights Activists Take "War on Leather" to Motorcycle Gang Rally.

Pennsylvania - ~Three Reported Missing After Animal Rights Activists Take "War on Leather" to Motorcycle Gang Rally.~

Johnstown, PA: Local and state police scoured the hills outside rural Johnstown, Pennsylvania, after reports of three animal rights activists going missing after attempting to protest the wearing of leather at a large motorcycle gang rally this weekend. Two others, previously reported missing, were discovered by fast food workers "duct taped inside several fast food restaurant dumpsters," according to police officials.

"Something just went wrong," said a still visibly shaken organizer of the protest. "Something just went horribly, horribly, wrong."

The organizer said a group of concerned animal rights activist groups, "growing tired of throwing fake blood and shouting profanities at older women wearing leather or fur coats," decided to protest the annual motorcycle club event "in a hope to show them our outrage at their wanton use of leather in their clothing and motor bike seats." "In fact," said the organizer. "Motorcycle gangs are one of the biggest abusers of wearing leather, and we decided it was high time that we let them know that we disagree with them using it... Ergo, they should stop."

According to witnesses, protesters arrived at the event in a vintage 1960's era Volkswagen van and began to pelt the gang members with balloons filled with red colored water, simulating blood, and shouting "you're murderers" to passers by. This, evidently, is when the brouhaha began.

"They peed on me!!!" charged one activist. "They grabbed me, said I looked like I was French, started calling me 'La Trene', and duct taped me to a tree so they could pee on me all day!"

"I... I was trying to show my outrage at a man with a heavy leather jacket. And, he... he didn't even care. I called him a murderer, and all he said was, 'You can't prove that.' Next thing I know is he forced me to ride on the back of his motorcycle all day, and not left me off, because his girl friend was out of town and I was almost a woman."

Still others claimed they were forced to eat hamburgers and hot dogs under duress. Those who resisted were allegedly held down while several bikers "farted on their heads."

Police officials declined comments on any leads or arrests due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, however, organizers for the motorcycle club rally expressed "surprise" at the allegations.

"That's preposterous," said on high ranking member of the biker organizing committee. "We were having a party, and these people showed up and were very rude to us. They threw things at us, called us names, and tried to ruin the entire event. So, what did we do? We invited them to the party! What could be more friendly than that? You know, just because we are all members of motorcycle clubs does not mean we do not care about inclusiveness. Personally, I think it shows a lack of character for them to be saying such nasty things about us after we bent over backwards to make them feel welcome."

When confronted with the allegations of force feeding the activists meat, using them as ad hoc latrines, leaving them incapacitated in fast food restaurant dumpsters, and 'farting on their heads,' the organizer declined to comment in detail. "That's just our secret handshake," assured the organizer.

This question kinda fits in a couple of the other threads that we have already but, instead of necro-ing an old thread, I figured I'd start anew.

So, here goes: I am wondering about some potential options I have for my various retirement accounts. First off, I put money (and max out all employer matching) into my pension system. I also put a small %, bi-weekly, into a 401k (after tax) account that is one of the "you pick 'em" kind of account; not the set maturity year ones, but where I select mutual fund (international, equity, etc.) type allocations. There is no employer matching through these. There is, however, the opportunity to transfer the money into a self-directed account through TD-Ameritrade that I have signed up for, but not put any funds in yet.

I also have my Roth IRA holdings in a Zecco account that I self manage.

My question is; can/should I combine these into one account, or is it best to leave them separate (they are well below SIPC coverage limits, of course)?

Is it even possible? Does it make sense? I haven't investigated if TD offers a DRiP option but, would it make more sense to have it all together if they do?

Or, does it really not matter?

Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

I've seen two offers in a month from Chase enticing me to come down and open (another) free checking account. The first one, I took advantage of, came in the packet of mailings that the post office sends when you change addresses. It was $125 to open up a free (with direct deposit) checking account. I already have one, but mine originated in TX and has caused me some problems with money transfers between it and my NY savings. Anyway, this last problem prompted me to go open a NY checking and, when I remembered the deal, I asked the guy. He said all I need to do was bring in the coupon and he'd hook me up. Done and done; about two weeks ago.

So, yesterday, I get an offer from them again. This time, it's only $100, but it's to do the exact same thing; which would mean I have 3 checking accounts with them.

I've gotta (hopefully) believe that they know I already have accounts with them and, on top of that, that they would be smart enough to not send me multiple offers, but who knows?

The significance is this: Back in late 2005 and early 2006, Washington Mutual did the exact same thing. I opened a free checking account because they had a $75 offer for doing so. Then, a couple months later, I got a call from my local branch about another $125 offer to open another account. They offered to do everything over the phone and only required me to deposit $1. I had to do NOTHING else, except wait the 6 or so weeks to close the account until after I received my $125 gift card.

WaMu was expanding like crazy at that time; buying up smaller banks and building tons more in the Austin area. Chase has the same thing, albeit under different circumstances, by sucking up thousands of WaMu locations and having branch overkill.

Now, why would they do that? Is there something involved with the number of accounts that allows them to borrow more money from the Fed/other banks? I mean, since I already had an account with them, realistically, they're not getting anymore money out of me as I would have had the money in original account anyway.

Could this mean that Chase is in the same trouble, or sees the same troubles on the horizon, that WaMu did?

You figure with what happened over the past 2 years these banksters would've had the fear of God put into them... no such luck.
